Footprints Songs and Poetry for a Sustainable Planet

Footprints Cover

The concept for this CD was initiated after a conversation regarding the Herculean difficulties perceived around the possibilities for change.

We need inspiration to motivate us.

Students in AMDSB  were invited to submit a song or a poem that inspires energy efficiency, conservation and hope for a sustainable planet. They could enter singly, as a class, a team, or a band. They were encouraged to surprise us!

All entries were submitted to our judges anonymously.

Three judges, the Head of Literary Services at the Stratford Festival, the past Director of Music at the Stratford Festival and a local Environmentalist had the difficult task of selecting the few from the many.

Winners' submissions were then arranged and recorded by our wonderful team of professional musicians and engineers. The results of this collaboration in process can now be shared with you.

These young voices can focus and inspire us. The gifts of talent and heart can raise awareness and also pragmatically, funds that can effect real change in our world.

Thank you for joining us and being a part of this dream.

What If?

Song – Primary Winner
Mrs. Hearn’s Grade 2S Class, Huron Centennial Public School

What if we went and planted some trees?
Then we would be able to breathe
What if we had a lot less cars?
Then we'd be able to see the star

What if we topped wasting food?
Then everyone would be in a good mood
What if we stopped polluting the air?
Then everyone would know we care

What if we recycled our paper, please?
Then we would have a lot more trees
What if we had a lot more trees?
Then we would be able to breathe

Teach Our Children

Song – Junior/Intermediate Winner
Clara Leney, Katie Leach Russo, Iris Robinson and Ana Staffen, Grade 7A, Stratford Central Public School

Clara Leney, Katie Leach Russo, Iris Robinson and Ana Staffen perform the text on the CD with Barbara Fulton

Chorus:
Teach your children,
your children to come,
to help the environment,
to stop all pollution.

Litter is clogging our
woods and our parks,
GLOBAL WARMING!

It’s even destroying
Beavers and Aardvarks
GLOBAL WARMING!

The ice in the North
is melting in Denmark,
GLOBAL WARMING!

{Don’t trash the Earth,
keep it pollution free,
or you’ll ruin the land,
the Earth and the sea.

Don’t fill it with garbage,
or dirty its air,
If you ruin our planet,
you CAN’T live there!

Chorus} edit

The solution to our problem,
is simple indeed.
There’s lots we can do,
to succeed.

Energy efficient lightbulbs,
Solar-powered panels,
wind turbines that turn!
Geo-thermal energy,
walk or bike to school,
That’s cool!

Here comes Recycle man!
REDUCE! REUSE! RECYCLE!

Chorus

Dream Green

Song - Junior/Intermediate Runner-Up
Natalie Rohfritsch and Abigail Winter-Culliford, Grade 7, Stratford Central Public School

Energy efficiency, conservation, hope
We want a better planet so just get up on your feet
Everyone together.
Think about the difference we can make.

Starting with the garbage,
Then turn off the lights.
You can make a difference doing simple things.

When you have some noodles,
Don’t throw out the box.
Use the great recycling,
Help reduce the waste.

(Chorus)
We need to work together,
Don’t use the car
Just bike, run, walk.
Throw out the wrapper don’t let the water run away.

NO pesticides or herbicides
We’re killing our insects.
Then birds or toads can’t eat them
So it  wrecks our food chain.

When you go grocery shopping
And buy lots of food and drinks.
Instead of using plastic bags,
Use reusable ones.

(Chorus)

Why do we cut down trees, I ask.
We need the oxygen.
Well if you cut one down be a gent,
Plant one straight back in.

If we stop playing
And take a look at our earth.
We’re gunna regret it someday,
It’s never too late for help, so...

(Chorus)

Oh, how I wish our earth were green,
No more fossil fuels,
Use natural stuff and make our planet everlasting
Instead of never lasting.

Protect our Future

Poetry – Winner
David Noordhof, Grade 7, Stratford Central Public School

We must all work together
To help Mother Earth.
It is everyone’s responsibility,
Try with all that you are worth.

There is so much we can do.
There are so many ways we can aid.
If we all work together,
Our dues to Earth will be paid.

Just a few simple changes
Is all that it takes.
If we all give it a try,
Soon we’ll see the difference it makes.

A good place to start
Could be biking to school.
Or if you must drive,
At least try to carpool.

When buying your food,
It helps to buy local.
Try writing to political leaders,
It helps to get vocal.

We all need to shower,
Wash clothes and water plants.
But if we cut back on our use,
We’ll be taking a “green” stance.

For Earth’s Sake

Song – Senior Winner
The AMDEC Busy Beez Club
Jasmine Hanratty (singer), Grade 10, Lena McIntyre (cartoons), Grade 12, Kevin McIntyre (violin), Grade 11, Kesha Smit (lyrics writer), Grade 12, and Emily Vukovich (piano & music writer), Grade 9/10.

Sailing on a crystal sea
Riding on a storm, always is the norm
In what I'll show
Problems shouldn't grow
This is the key
Don't you see?

The ozone is down
A hole is there
Don't you care?
I really care
We should care
This problem we share.

One problem is pollution!
What can be the solution
To all the oil
That is making our seas soiled?
We need to be loyal
To keep up the toil.
We need to make haste
To clean up all our waste.

{Raise your voice to be heard
Take responsibility} edit
Stop talking, start acting
We can change the world.

Sailing on a crystal sea,
{Let's calm the storm, make that the norm
This is the key, don't you see?
Let's work together
Please!

Stop talking, start acting
This will save us and the world
Let's work togther
Oh, for Earth's sake!}edit

Let's save the world
We can work as one
Let's save the world
All for Earth's sake!

Save Our World

Song – Junior/Intermediate Winner
Rachel Hearn (music & lyrics) & Samantha Steckle, Grade 8, Huron Centennial Public School & Jaden Carter, Grade 8, Hensall Public School

Save our World

The ground doesn’t grow trees;
We have to plant them.
The sky doesn’t clean itself
day and night.
Pollution and gases are asked to stop now
‘Cause it makes the Earth harder to fight – itself

Chorus:
Save our world (year-eah-eah)
Stop all this (poll-u-tion)
Take a stand (together)
On a journey to save our world

Throw garbage in garbage pails;
compost in compost.
Put as many people are you can in one car.
And when you see littler on the ground – pick up up!
‘Cause it makes that earth easier to fight – itself.

Chorus x 2

By working together, we’ll all make a difference.
By working together, we’ll
make a change!
This helps out our children, and children to come
as we teach them to help the earth fight – itself.

Chorus x 2

There’s only one earth God gave us to live on.
We need to give it our own loving care!
So gather your friends and together we’ll help out.
The earth is so tender it could tear.

Chorus x 2

Voice of the Dying Nations

Song - Junior-Intermediate Winner
Matthew Cleto, Jacob Dingman & Connor Hendricks , Stratford Central Public School

The World’s a dyin’, people are cryin’
The water’s not clean, we better be green
We need to change our ways, we can every day, hey! They’re cuttin’ down our trees, we’re fallin’ on our knees
The forests are shrinkin’, smokestacks are stinkin’
We need to clean up our world for all the boys and girls
Though all is not lost totally, if we eat our food grown locally
We can use alternative energy, it’s a difference we can all see
{We gotta stop the wars, all the blood and gore
We need to stop disease and cuttin’ down our trees
We gotta stop corruption and chemical consumption} edit

If we all work together and pitch in the fight to sustain life we can win.

In the Future

Song – Primary Winner
Ms. Down’s 1K Class,
Huron Centennial Public School

In the future we'd like to see a planet where everyone
can be free
A happy world where children can play
On this Earth we'd like to stay

In the future we'd like to see a Canada where there's lots of trees
Where we protect the birds and the bees
And we clean up all the seas

Please, please, please, pretty please.

Sustainability

Poetry – Winner
Marilyn Adlington, Stratford Central Public School 8B

Today is the day
The time is now
To pull up our socks
And make our vow

To take care of our earth
No matter the state
And clean up our mess
Don’t procrastinate

Time moves fast
We must act swiftly
Look forward, not back
Go ahead quickly

Recycle is the way
And waste is outdated
Do the best we can
Before Canada is alienated

We need three to five plants
Which is an awful lot
As far as I know
One is all we’ve got

If we continue on
The way we have been
There’s no doubt in my mind
That we’ll regret the sin

I know if enough
Isn’t done about this
We’ll hit rock bottom
Polar opposite of bliss

So let’s stand together
And work for the cause
To reduce and recycle
There are nearly no flaws

I know we can do this
We just have to try
Let’s work as a nation
So we don’t say goodbye

To this wonderful planet
Of happiness true
If we don’t do a thing
Bid this planet adieu

A better future
Is on its way
Let’s make our planet sustainable
Isn’t that a cliché?

The World Needs Energy

Song – Primary Winner
Mrs. Hearn’s 2H Class, Huron Centennial Public School

The World needs energy, the World needs trees
The World needs air for us to breathe
The World needs water, the World need food
The World needs us to be in a good mood.

{So if you} make a mess, clean it up
You can use less, reuse your cup
Take  out the trash, recycle more
Save some cash and shut the door

The World needs energy, the World needs trees
The World needs air for us to breathe
The World needs water, the World needs food
The World needs us to be in a good mood

* note from a judge- the "World" in this context means-
humans, animals, plants and addresses our survival needs- the "World" as a planet has existed and will continue beyond humankind and our needs.

Sustainability Song

Song – Junior/Intermediate Winner
Sophia Day-Steele and Claire Roulston, Grade 8B, Stratford Central Public School

Chorus:

To help the weather, we need to work together,
Ozone  layer can be light as a feather,
You have to understand so you,
Don't pollute the air, aye, ayer, ayer, ayer, ayer.

Hey! This is our Earth
Y'all don't understand,
We will make you understand.

See a Hummer, give i the glare (glare)
Because they are making our world a nightmare (mare)
Making all the animals rare (rare)
Polluting all of our air (ayer)
When we are worrying about people on probation,
When there are others suffering from starvation,
Maybe we should stop spending at the gas station,
And use the money to make a donation,
With the issue of climate change,
And the solution is within shooting range,
Solar panels shouldn't be strange,
They should be on your roof so make the exchange.

I think we ought to be doing something,
I love the Earth so much it's got me sayin'.

Chorus x 2

{All right now stop,
Oooooooo,
Stop polluting the air.
It' stupid, stupid, stupid that you don't care,
Stop, stop, stop throwing green house gases to the sky
(to the sky)

Maybe Harper should get some cooler hair (cooler hair)
And deal with the issues that are really there (really there)
So don't you dare,
Ignore it, ignore it, Harper,
Please listen

Chorus x 2

Help save our Earth. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.} edit

Our Earth’s Transforming

Song – Senior Winner
Christina Leggett and Friends, Grade 11, Stratford Northwestern Secondary School

From the grass through the trees the wind blows all around.
It's cool, gentle breeze, only makes but a sound.
The grass was so green.
The sky was so blue.

I was only a teen when the temperatures grew.
They said its global warming
the heat was soaring
The ice it was melting
The skies they were storming
My  eyes were rolling.

Because I wanted to change time.
Back when things were always fine.
But, our earth's transforming

If we try, If we learn
We can all do our part.
Help the earth, Help ourselves
It's not too late to start.
Because we need to change time
To back when things were all fine
But now our earth's transforming.
